Classic Playmats

What material are the Classic Playmats made of?

The Lillefolk playmats are made of premium, non-toxic, odor-free EVA foam.

They have been rigorously tested to meet the US, EU and Australian Toy safety standards. Our playmats are free from heavy metals, phthalates, PVC and BPA and formamide.

EVA foam mats varies widely in quality and density. Some are thin and flimsy with a strong chemical smell, others paper-like with a cheap feel, and some with just the right softness and premium feel.

We know you are the type of parent who only wants the best for your child. We have therefore meticulously tested mats from 11 different suppliers to ensure we offer the highest quality EVA foam mat for your family.

What is EVA foam?

EVA foam is a lightweight foam invented by the shoe industry in the 1960s.

Shoes used to be made of a rubber sole and a leather top. This was hard on the joints as it provided minimal cushioning. The invention of the EVA mid sole was a huge break through. It was both more cost-effective and gentler on the joints. Now people could run more with less risk of joint paints and fractures.

Your Nike shoes midsole is still made of EVA foam, like the majority of shoes today. Crocs are made 100% of EVA foam and Birkenstock now makes 100% EVA foam sandals, marketed as waterproof and easy to clean.

EVA foam's soft, lightweight, and durable qualities make it a popular choice for a wide range of products beyond just shoes. Its versatility extends to padding in sports equipment like shin guards, floating devices, and yoga mats, providing comfort and support across various applications.

Do your playmats contain formamide?

We know many of you are concerned with toxins including the chemical Formamide which some companies use in their playmats. Formamide is an odorless liquid used as a plasticizer to make hard plastic soft.

U.S. does not have any legislation with regards to formamide. However, the EU only allows less than 200ppm (and France and Belgium even banned formamide in playmats and children's products in 2013, although the ban is now replaced by the 200ppm limit). We know you want the best for your child. That's why we go beyond current legislation and our playmats are completely formamide free.

Formamide is sometimes confused with formaldehyde, but they are different chemicals. Formamide is used in some plastic foams to make them soft, while formaldehyde is a preservative commonly found in products like pressed wood furniture, some paints, and adhesives. Our playmats are free from both formamide and formaldehyde.

Can I connect two mats to make a larger mat?

The Lillefolk playmats are designed without loose edges to ensure safety and durability, which means they can't be connected like some other brands.

Instead, we offer a range of pre-made sizes that fit beautifully into any space, providing a safe and stylish play area for your child.

Can I put a coffee table or craft table on top of the mat?

Our playmats are made of soft EVA foam and heavy furniture can make permanent indentations in the mat. We therefore recommend not to place heavy items on the mats.

Are your playmats suitable if I have pets?

Our mats are built to withstand daily use and are generally pet-friendly. However, if your pet tends to scratch or damage other items in your home, there’s a chance they might also affect the playmat.

Can the playmats be used outdoors?

The mats are best suited for indoor use. The design can fade and become damaged from long sun exposure.

What are the cleaning instructions?

Before first use, we recommend gently cleaning the surface of the playmat with mild soap, water, and a damp cloth. Wipe the mat, then dry it thoroughly with a towel. Avoid using harsh or abrasive detergents.

For regular cleaning, follow the same method with a damp cloth, soap, and water. If you clean the floor under your playmat, ensure it’s completely dry before placing the mat back, as trapped moisture could cause mold or mildew over time, potentially damaging your floor.

If using a vacuum cleaner, opt for a low suction setting to prevent damage to the mat.

Reversible One-piece Playmats

How do I know that your playmats are safe?

The Lilleflk Reversible One-piece playmats are made of premium quality, non-toxic memory foam and have been rigorously tested to meet the US and EU Toy safety standards for children’s products. Our Reversible One-piece Mats are free from heavy metals, phthalates, BPA and lead.

What material are they made of?

The Reversible One-piece mats are made from a new generation, non-toxic PVC. This is very different from conventional PVC!

Traditional PVC has been considered toxic because it often contains phthalates—a chemical used to make hard plastics soft and flexible. Phthalates are banned in children's products for a good reason: they are known endocrine disruptors that can cause hormone imbalances and are linked to reproductive issues. However, our mats use phthalate-free PVC, making them completely safe. They’ve been rigorously tested by third-party laboratories and exceed both US and EU toy safety standards.
